Anno 2070 would greatly benefit from the ability to temporarily speed up time. And the main issue is just that – you have to wait. So, most of the time you're only concentrating on building toward a few specific endgames, which means you build your stuff and wait for it to churn out the resources you need to complete a given mission. Go crazy in Anno 2070's sandbox mode.That's not to say the campaign and whatnot aren't interesting, but when Anno 2070 gives you specific goals to accomplish, especially early on when you're just being introduced to the way the game works, you don't really have anything else to do except those things. It's all well and good, but it doesn't change the fact that Anno 2070, like its predecessors, is best played in sandbox mode by those who enjoy "ant farm" type games.

And, bless it, Anno 2070 gives you a host of goals: tons of campaign missions with lots of choice as to how to complete them, a variety of game modes to beat when you're done with the campaign, and even in-game achievements for reaching certain production milestones and other meta-gaming tasks.
